PERSONAL TESTIMONY
My name is Susie Phua and I came into TRAC MW Executive Committee as an Honorary Secretary in 2025, after my retirement from the corporate world in December 2024. I believe God must have prepared the way for me just in time, as I don’t believe in coincidence.
I was brought up in a Christian home where my parents got their 5 children baptised as infants and then sent us to Sunday School, Youth Fellowship and the Girls or Boys Brigade activities. At home, we were taught to pray before meals and not to worship any other gods. Life was pretty normal in our Christian home, but little did I know that I need to have a personal encounter with God and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit in order to walk closely with my Creator. It is not enough just to be baptised and going to church every Sunday. I assumed that I was spiritually saved just because my parents were Christians.
When I was in my teens, I joined the 1st Kuantan Girls’ Brigade under the umbrella of Wesley Methodist Church, and was actively participating in national camps. I was 17 years old when I participated in a joint youth convention for Methodist Youth Fellowship, Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade at Anglo-Chinese School in Ipoh. There were 800 youths coming together, one of the largest youth gathering in the Methodist history at that time. Everyone was assigned to smaller groups of 10 to 20 for personal sharing. My group leader shared the gospel and asked if any one of us would like to accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Saviour. Although I have been through many of such sessions before, that particular day the Holy Spirit touched and convicted me. I have always been a “tough nut to crack” but when the Holy Spirit came to me, I could not hold back my tears and that day, I surrendered my life to Jesus, the Son of God who suffered and died for my sins.
After making a commitment to obey and walk closely with God, I began my life journey being more conscious of God’s presence in all my decision-makings and build strong and healthy relationships with people around me.
I also remember clearly one miracle, when God enabled me to enter Sarawak without a valid passport in one of our Girls’ Brigade Malaysia Officers’ Retreat. To cut the story short, I was already in KL and our EXCO already tried in vain to contact everyone in authority to assist me in this crisis. Everyone prayed for a miracle and God granted us the desire of our hearts! Praise the Lord!
As I am not a studious person, I truly appreciate that God has been very patient with me. Every day is a learning experience for me, yes, even at the age of 62. Over the years, my local church has also supported me in my spiritual growth. I am able to feel a sense of belonging, a place where children of God care for one another and supporting the needy in prayer, with their comforting presence and giving of material possessions to the less fortunate community in our midst.
God has offered us that gift to live forever with Him when Jesus died on the cross, and all we need to do is to take the first step and make that decision to receive eternal life, the life which will never end. This gift is free for anyone who is willing to accept it but it is definitely not cheap.
